As I talk to more people, I find that barking dogs tend to get on a lot of people’s last nerve. So, lets look at 7 things that you could be facing.

Territorial Barking

The other day a reader called me up and was at his whits end with his dog. Every time someone other than a family member would walk up the drive, his dog would go off the wall, and would bark his head off. This really upset a lot of people, and it was a bit intimidating to some people as well.

His dog was barking to protect his territory. The dog basically ruled the roost, and he felt like it was his job to protect the home from these strangers  coming in. Although there are things that you can do, you don’t want to totally stop them from barking at strangers, especially if someone is breaking in to your home.

Alarm Barking

Perhaps you are out walking your dog, or maybe whenever they see a threat they will start barking to scare off anyone getting close to you. they could also be barking if someone is agitating them. Often, people will see this happen, and mistakenly think that they work themselves up with barking, and that if you stop the barking, they won’t attack someone.

If your dog goes wild every time you walk in the door, often it is because you give them too much attention when you first walk in the door. Do you ever get frustrated, and growl, swear, or talk at things? I see people do this all the time, yet the same people want to complain when their dog gets vocal in the same situation. One of the reasons why dogs bark is because they are frustrated, either with a person, or something that they want.

Compulsive Barking

Some dogs bark just to hear themselves talk, kind of like a lot of people that I know. This can become really annoying, especially for your neighbors. Proper alpha leadership will help to limit this type of barking problem, but you need to make sure that it isn’t a deeper problem that you are dealing with.

Injury or Illness Related Barking

When a dog is injured, or sick, they will bark to let you know. Usually, this type of barking is more of a whine, mixed in with a solid bark. It sounds more like yelping. You need to pay attention to this type of barkings, since they may need to visit the vet to find out what is wrong. Often, they will bark, and then start licking or chewing on the area that is hurting, so you can check it out and see where they are injured.
